Luke, a first grader in Columbus, always enters the room with excitement, eager to pick up a book and read.

However, that was not always the case. As a kindergartner, Luke joined a United Way funded program at the Boys & Girls Club. He had trouble recognizing sight words and identifying lower case and upper case alphabet letters.

Luke received one-on-one help through this United Way funded program. As a result, his report cards, progress reports and star reports began to improve. His grades in Reading and English Language Arts have remained at an A-B average. He is not only learning to read, but is gaining a love for reading!
