Positive role models can make a lasting difference in a young person’s life. Through Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Chattahoochee Valley, youth mentorship helps students gain confidence, build healthy relationships, and develop the skills they need for the future.
For Jayson, a seventh grader at Rothschild Middle School in Muscogee County, mentorship has become an important part of that journey.
A Mother Seeking Support for Her Son
Jayson’s mother first reached out to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Chattahoochee Valley when she noticed her son struggling with confidence and navigating social and emotional challenges. Like many parents, she wanted someone her son could look up to and learn from.
The program matched Jayson with Dalando, a volunteer mentor who understands the importance of this role in a very personal way.
Dalando was once a Little Brother in the same program.
Having experienced the impact of mentorship when he was younger, he knew he wanted to give that same support to someone else.
“This is my way of paying it forward,” Dalando says. “From mentee to mentor.”
Time Spent Together Builds More Than Memories
Jayson and Dalando have now been matched for a year and a half. Their time together includes activities many mentors and youth share. They go out to eat, play football, draw, visit the library, and occasionally stop for ice cream.
These moments help build trust and connection.
Over time, Jayson has grown more comfortable opening up, asking questions, and learning from his mentor’s guidance. Through their conversations and shared experiences, he is building confidence, communication skills, and a stronger sense of responsibility.
Jayson describes their relationship simply and sincerely.
“I am proud of my Big Brother,” he says. “He is a part of my family.”
Growth for the Mentor Too
Mentorship also shapes the person who volunteers.
Dalando says being a Big Brother has strengthened his patience, empathy, and leadership skills. Supporting Jayson has helped him grow in his ability to listen, encourage, and guide someone who is still discovering his path.
Watching Jayson learn and mature has also reminded Dalando of the importance of positive role models in a young person’s life.
Looking Ahead
Jayson has clear goals for his future. He wants to do well in school, graduate on time, and create opportunities that will lead to a successful life. He is focused on continuing to learn and grow into someone who is confident and responsible.
His mother says the difference since joining the program has been meaningful.
“I am so pleased with the outcome and the changes I have seen in my son since being matched with his Big Brother,” she says. “I am grateful.”
