At United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley, we are proud to support organizations like Open Door Community House, Inc., which help local residents achieve their dreams. With the help of United Way’s Community Investment grants, Open Door empowers individuals to overcome obstacles and improve their lives. Kristen’s story is a perfect example of this impact.

The Challenge: Overcoming Financial Struggles

Kristen, a single mother, worked full-time as a sous-chef at a local restaurant. Despite her hard work, she earned only $18,720 a year, far less than the average sous-chef salary of $46,000 in Columbus. She struggled to make ends meet, and her challenges didn’t stop there. She lacked reliable transportation and had poor credit. On top of that, Kristen had a criminal record, which held her back from achieving financial stability and independence.

Kristen’s goals of building a better life for herself and her daughter felt impossible. But everything started to change when she joined the Circles in Columbus program.

The Action: Commitment and Support

Kristen dove into the Circles program with dedication. She attended training sessions, worked closely with her coach, and engaged with her mentor. Step by step, she began tackling her financial challenges.

Kristen disputed errors on her credit report and started using a low-limit credit card, paying it off every month. She also advocated for herself at work, highlighting how she deserved a raise and promotion. Kristen took control of her financial future.

The Result: A Transformed Life

Kristen’s hard work paid off. Her credit score jumped by 122 points, reaching 743, which is considered “very good.” She received a $3/hour raise and earned a promotion at work. With better credit and a higher income, Kristen was able to buy a reliable car, securing her transportation and boosting her confidence.

Kristen’s financial transformation didn’t stop there. She saved $5,000 and reduced her credit card debt by 80%. In July 2024, Kristen achieved another life-changing milestone: she had her criminal record expunged. For the first time, her past no longer held her back.

Kristen’s success has also had a positive impact on her daughter. Inspired by her mother’s progress, Kristen’s daughter chose a high school that supports her dream of becoming a historian. She was inducted into the National Honor Society and will soon be dual-enrolled in high school and college.

Kristen has also embraced her role as a community leader. At 40 years old, she registered to vote for the first time, marking a new chapter in her life.

Kristen’s story is a powerful example of how United Way supports Financial Security and Youth Opportunity. With the right resources and support, Kristen turned her financial situation around and is modeling success for her daughter.

United Way is proud to partner with Open Door Community House to help individuals and families achieve financial stability and a brighter future.
