A Lifeline for Stability: Providing Essential Housing Support

The Challenge: Struggling to Find a Safe Home

Mae, an elderly woman living with HIV and a disability after a stroke, faced a major challenge when the home she rented was sold, and the new owners didn’t renew her lease. With a fixed income from Social Security, Mae struggled to find a place that would accept her application. As time passed, Mae became homeless. She moved between hotels and her child’s overcrowded home. Amid this uncertainty, Mae suffered a second stroke, making her situation even worse.

The Action: Finding a Home and Support

Southwest Georgia Housing Opportunities (SWGAHO) stepped in to help. SWGAHO guided Mae through the difficult process of finding a home. They helped her secure a residence that met her needs and was affordable on her income. With a subsidized rent agreement in place, Mae was able to stay in her new home long-term.

SWGAHO didn’t stop at just providing housing. They offered Mae ongoing case management services. This support helped her stabilize her life and focus on improving her health. Mae also gained the resources she needed to explore part-time job opportunities, which would supplement her Social Security income.

The Result: Stability and a Path to Empowerment

Today, Mae is stably housed and has the resources she needs to stay on track. Her health has improved, and she’s now considering part-time work. For Mae, the support she received was more than just finding a home—it was about regaining dignity, stability, and independence.

Mae’s journey aligns with United Way’s vision to support a stronger, more resilient community. Through immediate housing assistance and long-term support, Southwest Georgia Housing Opportunities helped Mae overcome an urgent need and build a path to stability. This holistic approach helps individuals like Mae regain control over their health and financial future, fostering long-term independence and resilience.

United Way’s Community Investment Grants help organizations like SWGAHO continue providing essential services to people like Mae. These grants ensure that local organizations have the support needed to create pathways to security and empower families to build brighter futures. By partnering with dedicated organizations, United Way helps lay the foundation for a future where every individual has the opportunity to thrive.
