Poverty is a major challenge in the Chattahoochee Valley, making it hard for many children to access the resources they need to succeed. For many youth, finding ways to build confidence and essential skills can be the key to breaking the cycle of poverty. The Chattahoochee Council, Boy Scouts of America, is stepping in to make a difference.
Through strong partnerships with the Columbus YMCA, Boys & Girls Club, and Phenix City Housing Authority, the Chattahoochee Council delivers after-school programs that help youth grow. These programs provide a safe space for children to build skills and explore new interests. Every week, they participate in hands-on activities that challenge them and boost their confidence.
In these programs, kids explore STEM topics by making slime, learn engineering principles by building pinewood derby cars, and practice leadership by creating their own Meeting Code of Conduct. This student-driven approach helps kids take responsibility for their behavior, stay focused, and respect each other.
The results are clear. As youth develop new skills, they also build confidence. They see themselves as capable of success, both at school and in life. These programs help them grow into responsible, engaged members of their communities.
United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley is proud to support this initiative. Together with the Chattahoochee Council, we help ensure that every child has the opportunity to thrive. When we invest in our youth, we create stronger, more connected communities for everyone.
Through this partnership, we’re helping youth grow into their best selves—building skills, confidence, and a brighter future.
