How MercyMed of Columbus is Helping Improve Health Through Nutrition

At United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley, we support organizations like MercyMed of Columbus. MercyMed, funded through United Way’s Community Investment grants, provides vital health services to local residents. One story that stands out is about Lisa, a patient who faced serious health challenges. With help from MercyMed’s Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and their support programs, Lisa’s health has taken a remarkable turn.

The Challenge: Struggling with Serious Health Issues

Lisa was dealing with several health problems. Her blood pressure was high, she had obesity and diabetes, and she was vitamin D deficient. Despite these challenges, Lisa wasn’t eating regular meals. Instead, she relied on sweet tea to get through the day. She didn’t know how to read food labels or prepare balanced meals. Managing her diabetes was especially difficult because she didn’t understand which foods could affect her blood sugar.

Lisa’s primary care provider at MercyMed recommended she meet with the RDN to improve her nutrition. However, it became clear that Lisa’s health issues were also linked to not having enough food.

The Action: Teaching Nutrition and Providing Support

Jamie, the RDN at MercyMed, began by teaching Lisa about nutrition. She used the diabetic plate method to show Lisa how to balance her meals. Jamie also taught her how to read food labels and make healthier choices. Most importantly, Jamie identified the root cause of Lisa’s struggles—she didn’t have enough food.

To help, Jamie connected Lisa with local food pantries and MercyMed’s Farmer’s Market discount program. Lisa was also enrolled in the Fruit and Vegetable Prescription (FVRx) program, which provides fresh produce. Lisa was excited to join the program and loved receiving fresh vegetables, fruit, and eggs each week.

The Result: Health Improvements and Empowerment

With regular access to healthy food and the right tools, Lisa’s health has greatly improved. Her blood pressure, once dangerously high, is now in the stage 1 hypertension range. This is a life-saving change. Lisa has also lost 42 pounds and lowered her BMI by 12%.

Lisa’s progress shows the importance of nutrition education and access to healthy food. Thanks to MercyMed’s support, she has taken control of her health and is on the path to a better life.

By helping individuals like Lisa access nutritious food and education, MercyMed is improving health outcomes and supporting stronger communities. The programs also address food insecurity, a key factor in poverty, ensuring that people have the resources they need to thrive.

United Way is proud to work with partners like MercyMed to help people improve their health and achieve their full potential.
