At United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley, we are proud to support organizations like Open Door Community House, Inc. Through our Community Investment grants, Open Door provides critical educational resources to students facing academic challenges. One such story comes from Laura, a middle school student who turned her academic struggles around with the help of Mathews Promise Academy.

The Challenge: Overcoming Academic Struggles

When Laura first joined Mathews Promise Academy, she was falling behind her classmates. Although she had a 504 Plan, which provides accommodations for students with disabilities, it wasn’t meeting all of her needs. Recognizing this, Laura’s mother sought additional support to help her thrive and reach her full potential.

The Action: Providing Tailored Support and Advocacy

The team at Mathews Promise Academy recognized that Laura needed more support. They provided her with one-on-one tutoring and homework assistance. But the help didn’t stop there. Open Door Community House also worked with Laura’s mom to advocate for a more comprehensive learning plan: the Individualized Education Program (IEP).

Unlike a 504 Plan, which offers accommodations, an IEP gives students customized learning interventions. The IEP is designed for students who need specialized instruction. With the IEP in place, Laura received more focused support, allowing her to catch up and stay engaged in her studies.

The Result: Academic Success and Empowerment

Thanks to the support from Mathews Promise Academy and her mother’s advocacy, Laura’s academic journey has taken a positive turn. With the IEP in place, Laura’s grades improved. She now turns in assignments on time and actively participates in class. Most importantly, her confidence has grown. Laura went from feeling discouraged to feeling empowered and engaged in her learning.

Laura’s story shows the power of personalized support. With the right resources and advocacy, Laura now has a bright, successful future ahead of her.

Ensuring that all children have the support they need to succeed in school is critical to breaking the cycle of poverty. By partnering with organizations like Open Door Community House, United Way helps create educational opportunities for students, especially those facing challenges.

The work being done by Mathews Promise Academy and Open Door Community House ensures that children like Laura are not left behind. By providing individualized support and advocating for educational plans, they are contributing to a stronger, healthier community. Through our partnerships, United Way is helping local youth achieve their full potential.
