Finding a Role Model

Little Sister Jayla is a bright, motivated 5th grader at Reese Road Elementary School. She has a big heart and natural leadership skills. Her mother describes her as a caring child who loves to connect with others and tries hard to fit in.

Wanting Jayla to grow in confidence and self-worth, her mother enrolled her in Big Brothers Big Sisters. She hoped the program would help Jayla understand that she doesn’t have to please everyone to be accepted. At first, Jayla felt nervous about what to expect. Meeting a new mentor was a big step.

A Life-Changing Match

In December 2023, Jayla was matched with her Big Sister, Jackie Jenkins. Jackie has volunteered with Big Brothers Big Sisters since 2019. She joined the program to help a young girl set goals, build strong values, and feel respected.

From the beginning, Jackie made open communication a priority. She not only built trust with Jayla, but also made a strong connection with her family. Jayla quickly felt safe and supported in her presence.

Together, they’ve enjoyed many special moments, like volunteering, exploring new activities, and learning more about each other. Jackie has helped Jayla embrace her strengths and navigate the ups and downs of growing up.

“Their relationship is so good,” said Jayla’s mother, Ms. Lampkin. “The support Jackie provides has been a source of growth for Jayla.”

Growing with Confidence

Because of her open heart and willingness to try new things, Jayla has thrived. Her confidence has grown—not just in the classroom, but in life. She now feels more connected to her community and shows greater care and respect for others. Jayla is becoming a confident young lady, full of curiosity and joy.

Her bond with Jackie continues to grow stronger each month. The two are now nearly inseparable. Jayla is eager to discover new hobbies, enjoy local favorites like The Juicy Crab, and simply spend time with someone who believes in her.

“We’re two peas in a pod,” said Big Sister Jackie.

The Power of Mentorship

Big Brothers Big Sisters creates lasting, meaningful relationships that shape young lives. Because of United Way’s Community Investment grants, programs like this one are possible. United Way’s support ensures that more kids like Jayla have a mentor who helps them build confidence, achieve their goals, and believe in their future.

Jayla’s journey is a powerful reminder of what happens when a child is matched with the right mentor. Thanks to Big Brothers Big Sisters and the support of United Way, Jayla is growing into her full potential. Together, we can continue to uplift young people, support families, and build stronger communities across the Chattahoochee Valley.
