Building a Future of Strength and Service Through Girl Scouts

The Challenge: Facing Adversity with Strength

For many young girls, overcoming life’s challenges requires resilience, support, and the right opportunities. Girl Scouts of Historic Georgia, a United Way partner, is helping girls develop these qualities. Through programs like Direct Delivery, Girl Scouts empowers girls to rise above difficult circumstances and become leaders in their communities.

The Action: A Strong Foundation of Support and Empowerment

Autumn, a Junior Girl Scout at Lonnie Jackson Academy, is a living example of strength and courage. She joined Girl Scouts through a partnership with the Muscogee County School District Summer Learning Experience. Having grown up in Augusta, Georgia, Autumn was familiar with the Girl Scouts through her older sister. When her family moved to Columbus, her mother, Monica, became a dedicated volunteer to ensure Autumn continued her Girl Scout journey.

Autumn has embraced every opportunity the Girl Scouts offer. She attends every troop meeting and participates in all available events. Currently, Autumn is working toward earning her Bronze Award, the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can achieve. This milestone showcases her dedication to making a positive impact in her community.

The Impact: Learning Leadership Through Real-Life Challenges

After the sudden death of her father, Autumn faced a personal loss that shook her world. Through the heartbreak, Autumn found strength in her Girl Scout experience. Her troop leaders provided guidance, helping her navigate her grief while reinforcing the values of the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

One of the most emotional moments in Autumn’s journey came when she visited the Legacy Museum in Montgomery. The powerful experience exposed her to the harsh realities of history, sparking deep questions about faith, cruelty, and suffering. Her troop leaders used these moments to teach Autumn about leadership. They showed her how to face hard truths with courage and how to choose kindness, even when life feels unfair.

Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders

Autumn continues to thrive as a Girl Scout, using her experiences to grow as a leader. She’s not only a successful Girl Scout Cookie entrepreneur but also led her school’s robotics team to a first-place regional win. Through her Girl Scout journey, Autumn is learning essential skills like goal-setting, money management, and teamwork.

United Way’s support of the Girl Scouts’ Direct Delivery program helps girls like Autumn access life-changing experiences. These opportunities give them the tools they need to succeed, both in school and in life. Autumn’s growth as a leader is proof that with the right support, every girl can rise above challenges and create a brighter future.
