Restoring Hope and Confidence After Domestic Violence

The Challenge: Overcoming Fear and Uncertainty

A woman arrived at Hope Harbour in deep emotional distress after years of domestic violence. She struggled to rebuild her life for herself and her children. Fear, sadness, and uncertainty weighed heavily on her, leaving her unsure if she could make a fresh start. Self-doubt consumed her as she faced the daunting task of starting over.

The Action: Compassionate Support and Trauma-Informed Care

At Hope Harbour, the woman immediately met with a dedicated advocate. Together, they created a personal action plan, setting meaningful and achievable goals to guide her toward stability. Through support groups focused on healing, self-awareness, and empowerment, she rediscovered her strengths and began rebuilding her identity.

Hope Harbour’s staff offered emotional and practical support at every step. She learned to set boundaries, manage stress, and gain confidence in her ability to rebuild her life. The community at Hope Harbour gave her the strength to overcome past trauma and take control of her future.

The Result: Achieving Independence and Inspiring Others

With determination and support, she achieved every goal she set. She secured stable employment and found an apartment—once impossible dreams became reality. As her confidence grew, so did her sense of self-worth.

Her children now have a safer, more stable environment, breaking the cycle of trauma they had endured. Today, the woman is grateful for the guidance and support she received. She has become a role model for other women facing similar struggles, sharing her story to inspire those who feel hopeless.

Her journey showcases the power of trauma-informed care, goal-setting, and the unwavering support Hope Harbour provides. With their help, she reclaimed her life, built a brighter future, and gave her children the stability they deserve.

Powered by United Way: Creating Opportunities for Hope and Healing

Domestic violence doesn’t affect everyone the same way. Survivors experiencing poverty often face additional barriers, especially when financial abuse is involved. In many abusive relationships, the abuser maintains full control over money and resources, making it nearly impossible for the victim to leave without risking total financial instability. This control can keep survivors trapped in dangerous situations far longer. Programs like Hope Harbour provide the holistic support needed to address these challenges, helping survivors regain their independence and rebuild their lives with dignity and confidence.

Hope Harbour’s programming receives funding from United Way through Community Investment Grants. These grants are awarded annually through a competitive process reviewed and selected by a dedicated team of local community volunteers.

Together with our partners like Hope Harbour, United Way helps build a community where everyone has the opportunity to heal, thrive, and achieve their full potential.
