Help Spark a Love of Reading in Local Classrooms

Read Across America Volunteer Opportunities are now open through United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley for March 2 through March 6. Community members are invited to volunteer at local Community Schools in Muscogee County, Georgia and Phenix City, Alabama to read with students and promote a lifelong love of learning.

Just one hour of your time can help a child build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and discover the joy of reading.

Why This Matters

Literacy is the foundation of opportunity.

Through our Youth Opportunity impact pillar, United Way works to ensure every young person has the tools they need to succeed in school and in life. Reading proficiency by third grade is one of the strongest predictors of long-term academic success. When children feel confident reading, they are more likely to graduate, pursue college or career pathways, and contribute positively to their community.

These Read Across America Volunteer Opportunities directly support educational equity across our region by placing caring adults in classrooms where encouragement and representation matter.

Volunteers will read to multiple classrooms using books selected by each school’s media specialist. All event details and registration are available on the Volunteer Hub.

Walk to School Bus Day

In addition to classroom reading events, volunteers can participate in Walk to School Bus Day on Friday, March 6.

Join Community Schools United volunteers to walk students safely to school and promote attendance and readiness to learn. A walking school bus is a group of children walking to school with adult supervision. This model helps families feel confident about safety and ensures students start their day encouraged and supported.

This is another important volunteer opportunity connected to Read Across America Week and our broader commitment to Youth Opportunity. Learn more and sign up on the Volunteer Hub.

Part of a Bigger Mission

These Read Across America Volunteer Opportunities are part of United Way’s broader strategy to advance Youth Opportunity across the Chattahoochee Valley.

Through Community Schools United, we help transform public schools into neighborhood hubs where families, educators, and partners work together to improve student outcomes. We support early literacy, expand access to afterschool and summer learning, and connect young people to mentoring and enrichment opportunities.

Schools are the heart of thriving communities. Volunteers are the heartbeat.
