National and State Update-Ben Moser

Ben gave the following updates for Day 49 of the National Emergency over the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 from national, state and local news sources:

  • The federal guidelines that were put in place to slow the spread of the virus are set to expire today. President Trump has indicated that he has no intention of extending the measures. “They’ll be fading out, because now the governors are doing it,” Trump said referring to the restrictions
  • Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell said that we are going to see economic data for the second quarter that is worse than any data that we have seen for the economy
  • Breakthrough data in a COVID-19 treatment drug remdesivir; Dr. Anthony Fauci says the data shows that remdesivir has a clear-cut, significant positive effect in diminishing the time to recovery
  • More than 3.8 million Americans filed for jobless benefits last week
  • In Georgia, Governor Kemp appears poised to ease social restrictions that created disruptions for millions of Georgians. The month-old shelter at home order is set to expire just before midnight today
  • In Alabama, Governor Ivey’s Safer at Home order will go into effect at 5:00pm today and stay in effect until May 15, 2020. The state is taking gradual steps to get things back to normal

Columbus Area Updates

Department of Public Health (Columbus Health Department) Update-Natalie Man

Natalie gave the following updates:

  • There are 1420 confirmed cases in the 16-county health district
  • There are 299 cases in Muscogee County; 163 in Crisp County; 123 in Dooley County; 74 in Macon County; 159 in Randolph County and 377 in Sumter County
  • Please visit the Georgia Department of Public Health website for daily updates dph.georgia.gov
  • At this time only cases that test positive are being reported not recoveries
  • Testing hours have been expanded; criteria not as strict as more testing has become available, however testing criteria is based on Centers of Disease Control and Prevention guidelines and case by case screening
Muscogee County School District Update-Dr. David Lewis

Dr. Lewis gave the following updates:

  • High schools are in the process of distributing caps and gowns in preparation for the virtual graduation on May 22, 2020
  • Live in person graduations are scheduled for July 22-25 pending health conditions at that time

Coronavirus Response Fund (Crisis Fund) Update-Betsy Covington

Betsy gave the following updates:

  • They are mid-way through this week’s grant cycle
  • If you are an organization that has received support from this fund and you still have unmet needs or your needs have changed as you care for our most vulnerable populations, you can apply again
  • They recognize that the fund is not able to fund all the needs of every organization, but they want to be as useful as possible through this fund
  • Reminder to email Betsy at bcovington@cfcv.com to let her know that you have been on the calls. They want to know who is here and who they need to reach out to
  • Reminder about the AFLAC match. AFLAC will match individual gifts to the fund up to $2,000 for a total of $100,000; please go to cfcv.com/coronavirus to donate
